The Upside to an Accident: a $6.5 Million Personal Injury Settlement
Accidents happen when we least expect them. It’s unlikely you’ve ever been sitting around thinking that an accident is about to take place. In fact, about seven billion people move about the planet each day with the hopes that Murphy (of Murphy’s Law fame) will not come calling.
However, when an accident is due to someone else’s negligence or recklessness, especially if the injuries sustained are severe, the only silver lining may come in the form of a successful personal injury lawsuit.
Such was the case with a Paterson NJ woman who was hit by a New Jersey Transit bus in 2012. At the time, the result of the accident was an amputated leg. Fast forward two years: Elba Galeno was just awarded a $6.5 million settlement approved by the NJ Transit board.
Galeno, now 45, was about 30 feet into a Market Street crosswalk in Paterson when she was hit by the bus and then trapped under it after the driver backed up. The accident was caught on video, proving that the woman was doing all the right things and still couldn’t escape the accident.
