Individuals in New Jersey who are convicted of a first-time DUI won’t have to go months without a license. Instead, they can opt to have their driver’s license reinstated. There is a catch, though. Those who wish to retain their driving privileges must install an ignition interlock system in their car.

Ignition interlock systems work much like a breathalyzer. You have to blow into the device every time you intend to start the car. If the system detects your BAC is too high then your car won’t start.

Authorities hope this new change will help convicted offenders continue to maintain jobs and fulfill family obligations. That doesn’t mean that they’ll forgo the other penalties associated with a DUI, either. Those convicted are still subject to potential jail time, fines and court-ordered alcohol education classes.

So, what should you expect if an officer accuses you of driving while intoxicated in New Jersey? The officer likely pulled you over during a traffic stop, so they often won’t let you leave when you’ve been drinking. Instead, you’ll be taken down to the local jail. You’ll be booked and placed in a cell overnight.
