In New Jersey, allegations against juveniles are handled very differently from allegations made against adults. When a juvenile commits an act that, when committed by an adult would constitute a crime, that act is often considered an act of delinquency. Whereas the intention of the Courts in a criminal conviction is to punish the offender, the Court’s intention in dealing with an act of juvenile delinquency is to prevent the juvenile from committing this or similar offenses in the future.
Some of the more common juvenile acts of delinquency are set forth below:
In New Jersey, juvenile crimes are typically handled by the Superior Court in the County in which the allegations arise. Therefore, if a juvenile crime is committed in Watchung, the case will generally be handled in Somerset County Superior Court in the Family Division. Somerset County Superior Court is located at 20 North Bridge Street in Somerville, New Jersey.
