Exceeding speed limitations; speed specified in charge It shall be prima facie unlawful for a person to exceed any of the foregoing speed limitations or any speed limitation in effect as established by authority of section 39:4-98 of this Title. In every charge of violation of section 39:4-98 of this Title, the complaint and the summons or notice to appear, shall specify the speed at which the defendant is alleged to have driven and the speed which this article declares shall be prima facie lawful at the time and place of the alleged violation.
Penalties for Speeding on the New Jersey Turnpike
Those ticketed for speeding under N.J.S.A. 39:4-99 on the New Jersey Turnpike may face heavy fines and potential loss of license. Persons convicted may have points assessed to their driving record, and often those with points assessed to their driving record face higher insurance premiums. Those convicted of speeding up to 14 mph above limit can expect to have 2 points assessed to their driving record by the Motor Vehicle Commission. Those convicted of speeding 15 to 29 mph above the limit can expect to have 4 points assessed. A conviction for speeding 30 mph or more above the limit will result in the assessment of 5 points.
