New Brunswick Municipal Court handles most cases involving the possession of 50 grams or less of marijuana. In New Jersey, the penalties are harsh. Under N.J.S.A. § 2C:35-16, a conviction for marijuana possession will result in a license suspension of at least 6 months and up to 2 years. Additional penalties may include a $1,000 fine and up to 6 months imprisonment.
Under N.J.S.A. §2C:33-15, it is unlawful for anyone under the age of 21 to consume alcohol. If convicted, a defendant can expect a fine of $500 or more, driver’s license suspension or postponement, and mandatory enrollment into an alcohol education program.
