The City of Linden was originally formed as a township on March 4, 1861, from portions of Elizabeth, Rahway and Union Township. Portions of the township were taken to form Cranford (March 14, 1871), Linden Borough (March 30, 1882) and Roselle (December 20, 1894). Linden was incorporated as a city by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on January 1, 1925, replacing both Linden Township and Linden Borough (which had been formed in 1882 from the township), based on the results of a referendum held on November 8, 1923.

From Parkway:
Get on Parkway (North) to exit 136 Linden/Winfield exit. Bear right on exit. Proceed through traffic light and immediately get into the left lane. Make a left at next traffic light onto Raritan Road. Continue approximately 1 mile until you come to a fork in road. Bear right at fork onto North Wood Avenue. Continue straight and you will go across St. George Ave (4 Lane Highway). Go through four traffic lights. You will see City Hall on the right.
From Turnpike:
New Jersey Turnpike North to Exit #13. After paying toll (left fork goes to New York and right fork goes to New Jersey) bear to right and follow signs for Routes 1 & 9 South (Elizabeth-Linden). About ¼ mile road divides – take left fork and proceed about one mile. Exit road will bring you to traffic light. Go through traffic light and you are on Routes 1 & 9 South. At the third traffic light make a right onto Wood Avenue (Exxon Station on right at corner). Proceed on Wood Avenue through four traffic lights. At fifth traffic light make left onto Blancke Street (City Hall on right). Go into Parking Garage to roof.
