Hurricane Sandy is the largest Atlantic hurricane on record. In Cape May County, officials advised residents on barrier islands to evacuate on October 26. There was also a voluntary evacuation for Mantoloking, Bay Head, Barnegat Light, Beach Haven, Harvey Cedars, Long Beach, Ship Bottom, and Stafford in Ocean County. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie ordered all residents of barrier islands from Sandy Hook to Cape May to evacuate, and closed all Atlantic City casinos. Tolls were suspended on the Garden State Parkway and the Atlantic City Expressway on October 28. President Obama signed an emergency declaration for New Jersey. In Hoboken, residents were ordered to evacuate due to possible flooding.
Sandy struck New Jersey on October 29 with hurricane force winds and rain causing severe damage to New Jersey homes and businesses. Several people lost their lives. Many residents were without power for several days. As a result, many New Jersey residents will have to file a claim with their insurance company. A claim against your insurance company is known as a first-party claim.
Whether there is insurance coverage for the destruction to your home or business left by Sandy will depend on your policy. Most insurance policies cover wind damage. However, homeowner’s insurance generally does not cover floods. Flood damage usually is a supplemental option. Therefore, the first step in making an insurance claim is to read your policy and determine what coverages are available.
The next step is to assess and document the damage to your home or business. Take photographs of the damage in order to prove the loss caused by Sandy to your insurer.
Finally, once the loss is properly documented, contact your insurer to start the claims process. Document the time and date that you contacted your insurer.
If your insurer is not responsive or refuses to issue reimbursement for damage that should be covered in the policy, it is important contact an experienced litigation attorney to protect your assets. The lawyers at Bramnick, Rodriguez, Grabas, Arnold & Mangan, LLC have many years of experience in handling litigation claims. Jon Bramnick is a Certified Civil Trial Lawyer.
